Statewide Dangerous Dog Database

Statewide Standardization of response

Office Of Animal Protection Statewide Dangerous Dog Database

Currently:

  • The Minnesota Department of Public Safety issues and sells Dangerous Dog signs and tags for purchase by city and county agencies for use.

  • Dangerous dogs are defined by MN Statute and have statewide requirements that must be met once a dog is deemed Dangerous.

  • Potentially dangerous dog requirements are set by each individual city and enforcement of these declarations is city dependent.

    • There are no uniform requirements for declaring a dog potentially dangerous or for registering a dog as potentially dangerous.

OAP Solutions

  • The Office of Animal Protection would create a statewide Dangerous Dog Database â€‹â€‹â€‹â€‹

    • This database would track and hold accountable the owners of dogs deemed dangerous if they are in violation of the statute requirements.

    • Creation of a centralized database where municipalities can report and obtain reports of violations regarding the Dangerous Dog statute.

    • Residents would be able to determine if a Dangerous Dog is living in their neighborhood.

  • The Office of Animal Protection would provide guidance on Dangerous dog declarations and potentially dangerous dog requirements.
